Faced with a recent generation of electric cars that have “normalized” their power or rationality of use for their autonomy and recharge times, this 2019 Hyundai Kona EV that today occupies us, the most powerful and capable of the two possible versions that has just launched the brand, this, with 204 HP and batteries of 64 kWh, is willing to leave the map.
And it does so in the two possible directions: on the one hand, because there is no other electric equivalent that, without refueling a drop of fuel, allows you, starting from the center of the Peninsula, “touch” the sea with a single recharge of batteries; of another, because it benefits is a real time bomb. I, in particular, would prefer something less power and even more autonomy.

That much more rational Kona will probably find it in the other electric version of 136 HP, as the VW e-Golf has shown with a similar power, with a very remarkable agility and performance. In this case, linked to its 39.2 kWh battery, that is, with almost the same capacity of the new Nissan Leaf would represent the standard of the polyvalent electric car as today are the two cars mentioned above.

The heaviest element of the Kona is its batteries, but they are located in the lowest part of the car for the benefit of the center of gravity. An evidence that the brand is the latest in terms of electrical components are its lithium-ion batteries with solid electrolyte, with high energy density, compactness and durability, although it does not have a fully linear charging process.
Therefore, and considering normal use, the greatest advantage of this Kona is that with only 80 percent or even less you would have sufficient autonomy, more if you do not intend to complement the purchase of the car with fast chargers: at home or any domestic plug,At a rate of 2.1 kW, you will need a minimum of 8 hours for every 100 km of recovered autonomy if you move with a certain “carelessness” on the road and in the city, but without leaving speeds that are not already legal, but normal.
At a “rate” of 16 kWh / 100 km, the cost of electricity alone would vary between 1.3 and 2.7 euros per 100 km depending on the tariff and time of loading. By the way, other delicacies of this Kona EV is that it can be plugged into chargers of 100 kW, something that is not available to all electric, although these charging points are not abundant at this time.

2019 Hyundai Kona EV On The Road
Dynamically, one of the particularities of the 2019 Hyundai Kona EV is the number of kilos that its chassis manages – more than 1,700 kilos empty – and the enormous force that has to channel exclusively the front axle, as well as the one developed by a good turbo diesel around. 180 HP, but in this case available from the slightest pressure to the accelerator. Kia has opted for a cushioning of a certain firmness that in some situations can turn out to be somewhat dry, although comfort is more than admissible and, given the absence of mechanical vibration -not noise-, the refinement and pleasure of use are of “electric planet”.
Although with a moderate swing, its inertia makes it clear that this chassis is not, far from it, as sporty as the engine. As I say, the biggest factor is that the front end does not fully assimilate such force, and, although the acceleration is very good, the motor losses are very frequent, which is a handicap in urban use, in turns, to the passage of slippery signaling paints (better to use Eco mode here). Even on the road, in a straight line or when turning the direction to change lanes – or directly, in a curve – the Kona EV loses enough traction to originate a slight trajectory displacement that demands more attention than it should. In water, simply, you have to “reprogram” to manage the acceleration and do it even more smoothly.
A lot of autonomy, a lot of power, but the balance is not quite perfect, especially when you have a much more complete BMW i3, whose S variant almost borders on perfection. The perfect electric does not yet exist, waiting to try the less powerful version.
