The Diesel has come out of the Honda CR-V range, but a great hybrid has come to the range, and not just anyone. We thoroughly tested the new 2020 Honda CR-V Hybrid 2.0 I-MMD 4×2.
There are a couple of absolute truths and a relative one in relation to the 2020 Honda CR-V Hybrid. one, which is an SUV that spends very little in traffic conditions, speed and normal circulation. another, that “at German speeds”, once again it is demonstrated that there is no hybrid with turbodiesel efficiency levels -although, I already told you that the former more than compensates for the second-; and one last, and this is already totally subjective, that the operation of the CR-V will end up convincing you more and more with the kilometers, so you will have to give it a week of margin until you “do” your technology and know how to take advantage of it. one hundred by one hundred.
What I do need before going into detail is that you have a minimal notion of what the Honda I-MMD hybrid system and its different driving modes conceals, a technology that has been aging in barrels for some years to land in Europe for the first time in this CR-V. The I-MMD system works, basically as an electric extended range but with self-rechargeable “support” batteries of approximately 1 kWh, being the only energy source that moves the 2020 Honda CR-V Hybrid in EV Drive mode, ie exclusively electric propulsion and thermal and electric motors in a latent state.
The petrol engine of 145 hp has two functions: one, the principal, move to a generator that provides electricity that powers the electric motor itself, of 184 hp -Mode Hybrid Drive, therefore, propulsion is exclusively electrically and another – Engine Drive – in which it connects with the wheels through a clutch – therefore, thermal propulsion.
All these elements, except the battery, which is located under the floor of the trunk, are concentrated in the engine compartment in both the 4×2 and 4×4 versions, with the mechanical transmission system and not an additional electric motor. Honda, like Toyota, has also achieved that its hybridization does not suppose an excess of kilos: in the case of the tested 4×2, the CR-V I-MMD hardly passes 30 kilos more than the already light CR-V 1.5 V- TEC Turbo 4×4, an especially beneficial aspect when it comes to getting moving, something that beats record.
Test Drive – in City
First round, the rigorous urban layout. The truth is that there is no hybrid that does not perform minimally well in this specialty, but this 2020 Honda CR-V Hybrid simply comes out. It improves the already very good values of a Toyota RAV4 Hybrid -5,7 l / 100 km-, but also those of the Prius himself, a kind of efficiency. The key would bet that it resides in a lithium-ion battery of total proactivity in its management and speed of recharging … and in a greater capacity than promised. Honda estimates 2 km of electric autonomy, but it matters much more the sum of small large “battery” portions and, above all, the fork of speeds at which it achieves it.
The EV Drive mode can be selected at the touch of a button whenever conditions exist, but the I-MMD system has always been much smarter than me, it manages it completely automatically and best of all, it does not restrict its use to city or low speed: you will notice that you move very frequently at speeds of 60-80 km / h and more than occasionally up to 100 km / h or more exclusively with batteries.
And the best thing is that, unlike other hybrids, taking advantage of that electric “vein” does not imply accelerating with special care, allowing you a great vivacity of reactions to move between cars and lanes. Exiting the city with only 4.17 l / 100 km of average consumption is impressive for a car of its size, but there are still more surprises, some good and others not so many.
Engine Drivers the mode of highest efficiency: only one of the three machines works here, the tuned 2.0 Atkinson cycle, but as long as it can do so at very specific regimes and conditions. In fact, the electric motor itself, latent in thrust, comes to exert a certain reduction effect to “accommodate” the engine to the maximum efficiency map -from 1,500 to 3,000 rpm-. You have to give certain characteristics of layout and driving to get into action: low load in acceleration, favorable terrain, average speeds -between 80 and 120 km / h is the optimal fork-. Unless you see the corresponding icon on the screen – a crown in the energy flow diagram symbolizes the mechanical union with the wheels – you will not have enough sensitivity to warn the passage from Engine Drive mode to Hybrid Drive.
The use ends up teaching you to adopt that just acceleration modulation at the right time to add kilometers and kilometers in Engine Drive, with the thermal engine manufacturing “quietly” electricity at low intrusiveness in the passenger compartment , “acclimatized” in addition by an excellent system of acoustic compensation to cancel low frequencies through the speakers. Wheel with nobility, accompanied by an impeccable product quality for environment, suspensions and general touch of the car … But “fill” of clean thrust to the 2020 Honda CR-V Hybrid in acceleration and relaunching is to bring the gasoline engine to performance stress and ability to turn, with sensations that remind us of a not very pleasant variation effect, or yes, if you prefer it more clearly,
So varied is the terrain, so present will be this false “slippery” effect, although fortunately, the CR-V Hybrid reacts very quickly and recovers speed with joy to once again enjoy a calm atmosphere, at least, up to speeds in the that the aerodynamic effect does not yet mean a wall to the advance.
As I say, day by day you also end up finding their secrets, trusting in their very good 184 HP to manage more progressive accelerations, because response, there is plenty to spare. And if something you’re going to end up realizing is that, no matter how hard you try, there are limits of consumption impossible to overcome unless the route is minimally representative, because when the CR-V Hybrid rolls “wrapped” in the rhythm traffic, the action of the EV Drive and Engine Drive modes is definitive to quickly compensate the average.
2020 Honda CR-V Hybrid Fuel Economy
In none of my routes, even proposing it very seriously, I have not managed to overcome the 8 l / 100 km, but assuming that you were interested to know how much could be spent rolling without interruption at constant speeds, we have rolled the 2020 Honda CR-V Hybrid inside our Circuit of the INTA , obtaining these registries -by the way, not always representative with a distance of long distance-: 7.2 l / 100 km at 120 km / h, 9.7 l / 100 km at 140 km / h and 14.8 l / 100 km at 160 km / h. As you can see, far from our usual road circuit, where the CR-V shows very good acclimatization, achieving an excellent 6.4 l / 100 km, just two tenths more than the no less extraordinary RAV4 equivalent.
