After testing for the first time the 2020 Hyundai Nexo, the new SUV with hydrogen fuel cell, we can now advance your starting price and its availability in the market.

The Hyundai Nexo is not only a new SUV more but also, a very interesting vehicle because of the high technological load it provides since we are talking about the new generation of hydrogen fuel cell of the South Korean firm.

Before entering the field with our first test, we can now advance the first starting price of the Hyundai Nexo: from 69,000 euros. This is the official rate announced for the new SUV that will be available next September.

First Impression

The 2020 Hyundai Nexo has the fashionable format -the SUV body-, a reasonable size of the average saloon -less than 4.7 meters in length-, a capable trunk -460 liters- and a long wheelbase sufficient to can really accommodate five adults: the Hyundai Nexo is a car from the feet to the head.

Starting at the base, everything that is not seen in the Hyundai Nexus is completely different from a conventional car. You can lift the hood and you will not find underneath a combustion engine or a gearbox, but something more like an electronic equipment. They tell us that below, near the wheels, there is a motor, but electric. The huge prism that is enclosed there is called a fuel cell and is responsible for producing the electricity that the engine will need. Although it is called a battery -because it is a stack of electrochemical cells-, it is not a battery to use, but to operate it needs to continuously feed on oxygen and hydrogen. Oxygen is taken from the air, as in any engine, and an electric compressor spinning at 100,000 rpm is responsible for feeding the battery quickly so that it can provide enough power.

The hydrogen is carried on board, in high-pressure cylinders, 700 bars or 70 megapascals. The cylinders are placed under the rear seat and under the trunk, outside the body and Hyundai assures us that they are impact or leak-proof, full of monitoring systems and actuators to detect leaks or actively provoke them if it were convenient. With all the above, the surprising thing is that sitting on board the Hyundai Nexo or using its trunk, it seems an electric car quite conventional.

2020 Hyundai Nexo Hydrogen; its Electric

Under the front seats, there is a lithium battery, which is used to recover energy during braking. The battery also supports the fuel cell during accelerations. The fuel cell is designed to last longer than a conventional combustion engine and the presence of the battery comes to help in this, allowing it to operate at more constant power delivery regimes. Apparently, starting and stopping it is not the best for the life of a fuel cell – not even for a combustion engine, although here unnecessary consumption and emissions are avoided. That is to say, that of the Hyundai Nexo you could also say that it is a hybrid. Of course, a hybrid of zero emissions, by its two exhaust pipes, only water, and no CO2 is expelled.

With the electricity from the battery or the battery that electric motor that drives the 2020 Hyundai Nexo is powered, with a power of 120 kW (equivalent to 163 horses) and with a maximum torque close to 400 Nm, the strength of a good turbodiésel two liters of displacement. Push gently and in total silence. Total means that the rolling wheels are the protagonists of the rumor, internal and external.

The classic high-frequency whistle of the electric here is imperceptible, but when you step on it you can hear the whistle of the compressor, which resembles the turbocharger of a conventional engine, but at a lower volume. The answer is instantaneous, although perhaps not so vigorous because of the weight of the set (which has not been communicated to us) and because the silence camouflages the real performance: it announces an acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h in just 9.2 seconds. And with the advantage over an electric that the battery does not heat up, and you could repeat this exercise three or four times without the car turning on a warning light and limiting its performance. The whole concept of the fuel cell is so simple that toys based on fuel cells are sold. It’s so complex that we only have Hyundai and Toyota with cars for sale. On sale means that it is capable of competing with a conventional car, in any aspect. Of course, provided you find a place to refuel hydrogen. But at this point, with less than 3,000 cars a year produced in 2017, who will invest in installing a hydrogen?
