The Hyundai Nexo is not only a new SUV more but also, a very interesting vehicle because of the high technological load it provides since we are talking about the new generation of hydrogen fuel cell of the South Korean firm.
Before entering the field with our first test, we can now advance the first starting price of the Hyundai Nexo: from 69,000 euros. This is the official rate announced for the new SUV that will be available next September.
The 2020 Hyundai Nexo has the fashionable format -the SUV body-, a reasonable size of the average saloon -less than 4.7 meters in length-, a capable trunk -460 liters- and a long wheelbase sufficient to can really accommodate five adults: the Hyundai Nexo is a car from the feet to the head.
Starting at the base, everything that is not seen in the Hyundai Nexus is completely different from a conventional car. You can lift the hood and you will not find underneath a combustion engine or a gearbox, but something more like an electronic equipment. They tell us that below, near the wheels, there is a motor, but electric. The huge prism that is enclosed there is called a fuel cell and is responsible for producing the electricity that the engine will need. Although it is called a battery -because it is a stack of electrochemical cells-, it is not a battery to use, but to operate it needs to continuously feed on oxygen and hydrogen. Oxygen is taken from the air, as in any engine, and an electric compressor spinning at 100,000 rpm is responsible for feeding the battery quickly so that it can provide enough power.
The hydrogen is carried on board, in high-pressure cylinders, 700 bars or 70 megapascals. The cylinders are placed under the rear seat and under the trunk, outside the body and Hyundai assures us that they are impact or leak-proof, full of monitoring systems and actuators to detect leaks or actively provoke them if it were convenient. With all the above, the surprising thing is that sitting on board the Hyundai Nexo or using its trunk, it seems an electric car quite conventional.

The fuel cell is designed to last longer than a conventional combustion engine and the presence of the battery comes to help in this, allowing it to operate at more constant power delivery regimes. Apparently, starting and stopping it is not the best for the life of a fuel cell – not even for a combustion engine, although here unnecessary consumption and emissions are avoided. That is to say, that of the Hyundai Nexo you could also say that it is a hybrid. Of course, a hybrid of zero emissions, by its two exhaust pipes, only water, and no CO2 is expelled.

But at this point, with less than 3,000 cars a year produced in 2017, who will invest in installing a hydrogen?

- Architecture on demand . Unlike its predecessor, the Tucson, it is not a model that has been adapted to mount a fuel cell, but was developed from its origin for that purpose. But as not all the air sucked in may be necessary, it is returned to the outside, already clean. Thus, the passage of this Hyundai is able to reduce the emission of CO2 from other cars.
- Refueling: 666 km in 5 minutes . In five minutes the necessary H2 is refueled to produce electricity for 666 km -in the WLTP cycle-. This gas -52.2 liters per tank, at a pressure of 750 bars- is housed in two tanks located transversely under the rear seats and one under the trunk. They are made of aluminum, but inside they are covered with fiberglass.
- Where do I find H2 ? It is the problem, the lack of hydrogeneration; but in some areas, it is in the solution phase. For example, counting those of central and northern Europe, there are already 100 stations. And they will be 400 in 2023.
