2020 Lexus UX 250h Review – Beautiful Hybrid Coupe SUV
The 2020 Lexus UX 250h is a fusion between SUV coupe and car with the slightly over-elevated body. We have already tried it.
The UX 250h is for Lexus more than its next commercial launch – with a special launch series on sale in a few weeks and the delivery of the first “real” units in February 2019 -. It supposes the entrance of the brand in a category where until now it was not present, the one of greater growth at present, and it pretends to make a hole in it with a car of enormous personality and the hybrid approach that characterizes the Japanese brand. For that reason, they did not even consider the development of a diesel version and Spain will not have the exclusive version of gasoline that completes the UX project.
2020 Lexus UX 250h Design; Style & Dimensions
The Lexus UX 250h is innovative in appearance and concept when mixing dynamic aesthetics with aggressive lines. In fact, in the international presentation they defined it as an urban crossover rather than as an SUV, being aware of its asphalt orientation, hence a ground clearance limited to 160 mm. And we fully corroborate the idea. In fact, there is no hint of a high driving position or spectacular interior design or tires from 17 ” with low profile tires suggest that we were before an SUV with which to enjoy off the asphalt.
If the exterior of the UX 250h has a classically Lexus appearance, with very sharp edges and the double arrowhead pointing inwards, the treatment of the rear optical groups, with a led strip that joins the headlights, makes it possible to differentiate it from other models such as the NX 300h. The interior is surprising, with the controls of the central console very oriented towards the driver, specific buttons for the control of the air conditioning, the audio -on the armrest- and a large central screen that can reach more than 8 “in diameter. On the main instrumentation, two selectors allow to disconnect the ES, in two phases and choose the driving mode (Eco, Normal, Sport, Sport + and Custom). An additional switch would allow the EV mode to be selected by circulating at low speed and when the state of the boost battery was sufficient.
The rear seats can be enough even for people who exceed 1.80 meters both by a height of interior height and space for the knees, which is not surprising since the 2020 Lexus UX 250h goes to 4.5 m, if well, as usual, it is more performed for two than for three passengers in the rear seats. They could travel comfortably, once they had gained access. And this is one of the weak points of the UX 250h. The door is small and the access complicated to the point that you could run the risk of grappling with the wheel arch: design issues.
2020 Lexus UX 250h Hybrid Technology
When choosing its configuration , Lexus opted to maintain the line of work that has been working in recent years, a parallel hybrid, although in this case little or nothing has to do with the one used so far by Toyota in the Prius or C-HR, despite sharing the Global GA-C platform according to the internal denomination. Thus, it is supported by an unprecedented 2.0 HP 146 engine and an 80 kW electric motor associated – two in the case of the four-wheel drive versions – and the electric zone has been repositioned in the transaxle position, favoring the freedom of rotation of the wheels and better maneuverability, turning diameter between curbs of 10.4 m. The thermal engine is a two-liter four-cylinder and direct-indirect mixed injection (when driving at very low load) that allow alternating cycles Otto and Atkinsonfavoring response to the accelerator and smoothness in the processes of ignition and shutdown of the engine. It announces a thermal efficiency superior to 41%, but in addition, the system is configured to prioritize the operation of the electric part of the hybrid and has increased the speed range in which it is possible to completely turn off the thermal engine taking it above the 115 km / h, contributing to lower consumption. Together announces 178 Hp, with a maximum speed of 177 km / h, an acceleration from 0 to 100 km / in 8.5 and a correlated NEDC consumption of between 4.1 and 4.3 l / 100 km depending on the type of rim employee, with 0.5 l more for the 4×4.
The transmission of the Lexus UX 250h has also undergone a profound transformation. His denomination, D-CVT, of Direct CVT in English identifies to a change of speeds modified with a pinion in his interior that avoids the slip of the metallic belt in the moments of started and low speed. It is responsible for starting the march and only when it exceeds 60 km / h a clutch decouples and leaves the job in the hands of the variation, which ultimately will be responsible for transmitting the force to the driving wheels. The CVT pulleysThey have also been modified, reducing their angle to 9º, which allows the box to be “narrowed” and gain space so that the front wheels can improve their rotation on the vertical axis, thus favoring their urban maneuverability. In addition to conventional automatic use, the UX 250h offers the option of driving in a semi-manual mode, with six fixed points that simulate the speed changes either by using the paddles on the steering wheel or by sliding the lever into the side aisle.
According to versions, the Lexus UX 250h can have the AVS suspension with a variable firmness that would allow it to modify its firmness depending on the chosen driving mode and the speed of travel, which facilitates city comfort and high-speed stability. The key lies in a solenoid valve that opens and closes allowing the passage of more or less oil inside the shock absorber. Additionally, in case of collision imminence, the control system would select the former position in order to mitigate the effect of pitching or wobbling caused by the collision.
On the other hand, the 4×4 versions will have a second electric motor in charge of moving the rear wheels when the control unit detects that a motive power is necessary or runs the risk of incurring in an oversteer or understeer. In fact, the stability control is in charge of making it work and it would selectively brake the wheels improving the directionality of the 2020 Lexus UX 250h and its dynamic possibilities.
2020 Lexus UX 250h Safety features
Along with a large passive safety equipment, which does not miss the driver and passenger knee airbag , the Lexus UX 250h may be equipped with the Safety System + safety system , consisting of cruise control with braking function, night and daytime pedestrian detection system, daytime cyclists, lane maintenance with correction function and automatic change of road lights .
