Mercedes is in the process of transformation, a metamorphosis that comes gradually but without pause, with the electric car as the protagonist and an EQ sub-brand full of innovative proposals. Before entering into matters concerning all-electric Mercedes EQ, there will also be interesting developments with “more conventional” combustion engines or hybrid versions.


The 2020 Mercedes GLB is located between the GLC (below, in its next redesign) and the GLA, with a line of off-road inspiration. It will have versions of 5 and 7 seats, the latter with an elongated body and a wheelbase increased by 12 cm. The next generation of the Mercedes GLA is passed to the platform of the new A-Class, more modern, lighter and with greater interior habitability. There will be a plug-in hybrid with more than 50 km of electric autonomy and a “coupé” body, which should be called the GLA Coupe.


Thanks to the electrical architecture of 48 volts it is possible to feed elements destined to achieve greater efficiency, such as electric turbo or EQ Boost engine-alternator for soft hybridization , but also intended to improve comfort and dynamism, as is the case of suspensions active It is a perfect element to improve the dynamism of large SUVs, completely eliminating the balancing of the body and maintaining an optimal absorption of all types of potholes. Who would say that an SUV can be, at the same time, practical, sporty and comfortable.

Not only will it have a more dynamic look, but the 2020 Mercedes GLE Coupé will also feature active suspensions capable of generating forces, something that allows an exceptional level of comfort. Of course, the rear passengers of the redesigned Family E-Class will have a higher height.


The new Mercedes C-Class family will be based on the new MRA2 architecture. While maintaining a continuous design, you will approach the A-Class design language on the front, where you can have LED headlights with a range of up to 600 meters. The great leap will be experienced by the interior, both by design and content, with the advanced MBUX device to control all systems, a modern user interface, and much-improved connectivity. There will be a plug-in hybrid version with an electric range far greater than the current one, of around 100 km. A year later the All-Terrain version will arrive, with slightly elevated height, aesthetic attachments and protections in the low to give it a more rustic appearance.

EQ is the new electromobility sub-brand of Mercedes, under which a complete range of models will be created almost as extensive as conventional vehicles. The first has been the EQC, which shows the starting point on which the next releases of the EQ family will be developed, whose catalog by 2020 should already have four models, EQA, EQC, EQD, and EQS, which will increase to 10 in 2022.

Suffice it to recall the characteristics of the EQC SUV , which will hit the market in mid-2019, to get an idea of the mechanical configuration that its brothers will have based on the EVA electric platform, which is an adaptation of the current MRA architecture – with this it is possible to Take advantage of manufacturing synergies, including sharing assembly line with non-electric equivalent versions. It has an electric motor of the asynchronous type in each axis, which together allow it to approve a power of 300 kW (408 hp), with a maximum torque of 765 Nm.

The capacity of its lithium-ion batteries is 80 kWh, and thus achieves homolog autonomy of more than 450 km in NEDC cycle. To achieve greater efficiency, under normal conditions only the front engine works, optimized for low and medium revolutions, and in case of high demand for performance, or when driving at high speeds, the rear engine is also activated, configured to respond better to high turns.

By having an electric motor on each axle, the four-wheel drive is managed in a millimetric manner, even in slippery pavements, which allows very precise control of stability. Regarding its performance, it needs only 5.1 seconds to go from 0 to 100 km / h, with a maximum self-limited speed of 180 km/h.


As it is a modular architecture with scalable components, the capacity of the batteries, the power and the number of motors can be adapted to each particular model independently. In fact, in the case of the EQA, there should be an access version equipped with a single motor, with a lower battery capacity (in principle it would be necessary to shuffle options of 50, 60 and 80 kWh, although the 110 kWh will be exceeded in the higher ranges ) to reduce costs, but without giving up on a sportier variant equipped with two engines and total traction, which should not necessarily look like the AMG acronym, although it will belong to a line of electric models with more dynamic orientation.

The EQ range is characterized by its modern appearance and clean lines, with hardly any ribs, and that is what the latest designs of the star’s brand tend to, which soften some of its features in favor of a more rounded appearance, without neglecting a bit the aerodynamics. That an SUV like the EQC boasts a coefficient of penetration of 0.29 Cx is a very good reference, although it is true that its rival Audi e Tron remains at 0.28, and only 0.27 in case of equipping the mirrors optional through cameras. Of course, it can be expected that the sedan of the star are a reference, as they have been so far.

Within the EQ range, there will be several “traditional” sedan. While the EQC and EQA make use of adapted platforms (internally known as MEA1 and MEA1.5) that share elements with those used in vehicles with combustion engines, the EQS, scheduled for 2020, will have a completely new electrical architecture (MEA2), specific for electric cars, with completely flat floor and an extensive use of aluminum in its structure.

For this reason, its proportions will differ slightly from its combustion equivalents, such as CLS Class and S Class, since it will have a smaller nose, greater wheelbase, and extremely short overhangs, giving absolute priority to the livability of its luxurious interior. As befits a true flagship, will debut a good arsenal of new development assistants, but the most striking could be in terms of the comfort of its occupants, treated with care thanks to sensors sweating and body temperature in the seats and pulse monitoring.

The car will adapt the interior environment to the circumstances, offering relaxation options, or to raise the level of attention of the driver, diffuser of different aromas, heated and ventilated surfaces, glasses with active dimming, entertainment depending on the environment, planning of proactive itineraries according to the agenda of its occupants and a whole series of connectivity functions specific to the EQ range, including personal assistant.

Without reaching this level of sophistication, the SUV range will be represented by the EQB (planned for 2021), EQ GLE (2022) and EQ GLS (2023) , and in the long term the fuel cell technology will not be ignored, as demonstrates the recently launched F-Cell version of the GLC (in principle only a small series will be marketed in Germany), whose battery can be recharged in a socket and, during the march, by means of its hydrogen battery.
