New Toyota C-HR Hybrid Review – Luxury, Eco, Hi-Tech

Thursday, December 13th, 2018 - Toyota

Design and technology come together in equal parts in the New Toyota C-HR Hybrid, a car with a certain component of aesthetic caprice that is more versatile than its lines could suggest.

Little by little, Toyota is putting more emotional products on the market, and proof of this is this crossover of the C segment, the Toyota C-HR Hybrid that enters fully into a category that is increasingly in demand. Only available with front-wheel drive, it is animated by the efficient hybrid technology that has unveiled the latest Prius and has all the ingredients to be a successful model.

As for its driving, the Toyota C-HR brings a high level of use, with a lot of mechanical smoothness and a good riding comfort, the result of good soundproofing and very balanced suspensions. On the other hand, it has been equipped with a reactive response to the accelerator, so that you feel dynamic -especially when driving through the city. The direction, direct and quite assisted, also contributes to achieving that sense of agility, along with the little swaying of the body.

We must bear in mind that it is not excessively high,o that its dynamism and cornering stability are hardly affected by the center of gravity. In critical situations, the reactions of the chassis are quite conservative, easy and predictable. The rear train can provide some agility if you help it by raising the foot of the accelerator, always under the tutelage of an electronic stability program that can only be switched off at low speed. The chassis of the Toyota C-HR Hybrid is up to the task and without any problems, despite the fact that the level of performance and focus of the car are more in line with a relaxed driving.

Toyota C-HR Hybrid Performance & Driving Experience

With its 122 HP, the hybrid set of the 2020 Toyota C-HR provides a linear and progressive delivery of power. However, when you look at the speedometer, you realize that it is a fast car, despite the smoothness in which we are involved at all times. The working model of the automatic change is similar to one of continuous variation. Under normal conditions, it works like a charm, and even, as soon as the terrain is favorable, you find yourself roaming in electric mode without noticing. Uphill, when you ask for acceleration, the combustion engine is revolutionized more so that the batteries maintain the load, without the driver having to worry about modulating the accelerator in a different way than usual because the ratio between what you step on the right pedal and the acceleration is still proportional.

On the other hand, at low speed (up to 50-60 km / h) you can “force” the electric mode (EV) temporarily by pressing a button, as long as the battery is charged and there are a number of conditions. In any case, to circulate without starting the combustion engine is enough to be smooth with the accelerator (although the EV mode allows greater accelerations in electric) and pay attention to the intuitive left clock of the instrument panel, which indicates with precision the use of the power, with different zones delimited in their sphere that coincide with the phases of operation of both engines.

Also, the level of regenerative braking is represented in the said clock, which allows adjusting the degree of deceleration in an efficient manner, without the brake discs acting except in the final meters of the stop. For its operation is a car that is the most pleasant, and even relaxing in day-to-day traffic. Of course, despite using the platform of the Prius, the most specialized model within the hybrid range of Toyota, the latter is even more refined, comfortable and quiet, and perhaps with a greater power input at the start of the march, something that could be due to its lower weight (62 kg of difference verified in test units), or to a different programming of the electronics.

It is totally recommended, not only as a hybrid but also as a crossover. It is a model that likes, that consumes little and with which you enjoy getting involved in driving to take advantage of its virtues. The 2020 Toyota C-HR hybrid, like all electric hybrids of Toyota, has the ECO label.

In this hybrid of Toyota, you can see a welcome evolution towards a more emotional product, both design, and driving. Braking tact remains peculiar, as well as its dosage in certain circumstances, but it is not critical. As a downside, the rear occupants have little lateral visibility due to the shape of the window, a sacrifice that you have to be willing to accept in exchange for a bold exterior image. For the rest, it is very complete.

These are some important points regarding the 2020 Toyota C-HR Hybrid.

ELECTRICAL MODE. An advantage of the hybrid technology is that we can drive with the combustion engine off for short distances, but quite often. The EV button activates the electric mode manually, whenever there is a charge.

ACCURATE INFORMATION. It is the key for the driver to have control of the situation and, at the same time, achieve maximum enjoyment of use. The left watch shows the use of energy, be it the power we are using or the electricity we are regenerating when braking, so that we can take better advantage of the hybrid system’s virtues.

REGENERATIVE BRAKING. The batteries of the hybrid system are recharged during the march, either through the combustion engine, which can act as a generator or through the electric motor itself during braking and deceleration. In the latter case, its operation is inverted to generate electricity taking advantage of the car’s kinetic energy.

PEDESTRIAN DETECTION. Both the front camera and the front radar work together to detect obstacles and identify pedestrians, applying force to the brakes if necessary. The camera is also used for the lane maintenance system, the recognition of traffic signals and the assistant for long lights.

CONNECTED. The central screen and the controls that surround it are of tactile handling. Its handling is not especially intuitive, although there is no shortage of connectivity functions, real-time traffic and various applications that we can download. It also informs about fuel consumption and use of battery power on the different trips we make.

PURE DESIGN. The geometric texture that can be seen in the doors is repeated in other parts of the interior, which features striking inserts of different materials to bring a touch of modernity. The roof lining also has geometric embossed patterns, something that matches the sophisticated air of the model.

A LUXURY. The superior finish is associated with a generous level of equipment, with safety elements such as blind angle sensor, frontal collision warning, and rear cross traffic detection, as well as other luxuries such as the JBL sound system, rear camera, cruise control adaptive and leather upholstery with heated front seats.
